What is AdBlue and Why is it Essential for Diesel Cars?

Adblue, also known as Diesel Exhaust fluid(DEF) is very essential for diesel cars registered after 2015. Ad-blue is a trademark name owned by the German Association of Automotive Industry.

The main function of an adblue is to reduce harmful emission. It’s a mixture of urea and demineralized water that’s stored in a separate tank from the car’s fuel and inject into the exhaust system to clean unburnt gases.

Besides,Euro 6 regulations which came in last year have force manufacturers of diesel cars to find new ways to help reduce harmful emissions. Adblue are use on vehicles with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology.

How AdBlue Works?

It has a separate tank filled with Adblue, which is then inject into the exhaust pipe, in front of the SCR catalyst. When heated as a results of high temperature it decomposes to form carbon dioxide and ammonia.

This reacts with the harmful Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) molecules from the engine exhaust to form harmless nitrogen and water, which are release from the tail pipe.

What happens if my car runs out of AdBlue?

There will be a warning light display on your dashboard when the range for your Adblue is below 2300km which you have to go for a refill. Refusing to refill can prevent the vehicle from starting.

Where can I buy AdBlue?

You can get adblue to buy at most fuel station, repair shops, car accessories shops and online. They come in cans and drums measured in litres.

Adblue is corrosive and can dissolve materials.
